The Roundup; Oriole News and A Documentary Featuring An O's Fan Nominated For A Sports Emmy

As we are heading to the 2008 regular season, I think the two keys as to how far the Orioles get in a few weeks will be with Daniel Cabrera, young pitching along with the bullpen.

Daniel will be key part whether the Orioles take the next step to respectability or if they are stuck in neutral. Based on what I saw on MASN Sunday, he looked like what many saw in the World Baseball Classic and his final start 2006 against New York. I think his new found professionalism and seriousness (at least what I have seen so far), could lead to a breakout year. Of course, he needs to control his pitches and just keep the basic fundamentals in place.

In terms of the pitching, will the young Birds will take the leap forward, considering the expectation of inexperience in the rotation. With the departure of Erik Bedard from the rotation, a lot of pressure will be put on them to succeed.

Can Guthrie take his game to the next level? Will Loewen come back he! althy? is Trachsel close the end or can he pull out more tricks from the black cap? Will we go after another starter outside the organization?

The tragedy of the Baltimore team in 2007 was the bullpen – yes, the $40+ million big ticket item. Aside from Jamie Walker who was solid as the left handed specialist along with Chad Bradford, things were a mess. Both Walker and Bradford were way over-used, thus over-exposed and the Orioles had to rely on youngsters from the lower levels, journeymen and retreads from other teams to patch it up.

We know Bradford and Walker will be consistent, but how will Sherill do as the closer? Will Aquino, Burres, Sarfate and whomever else deliver?

So many questions, so few answers.

***

Garrett Olson has been optioned to Triple-A Norfolk; meanwhile, Georg e Sherill, who has been excellent in Spring Training, was been handed the closer's role.

With a less than two weeks to go, the Orioles face a littany of decisions to made -- mainly, the fifth starter, shortstop and possibly second base.

Meanwhile, Jim Hoey is hurting; Scott Moore, who has had a great spring is back in the lineup after illness, and Brandon Fahey is in the hunt for a roster, and possibly a starting spot.
As well, former Oriole manager Sam Perlozzo wants to manage again and Dave Jauss came to the team for 'serendipity'...

Monday was a sad day for those in Vero Beach, as the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have been in the area will more than 60 years to conduct Spring Training will more than likely leave for Arizona; however, the Orioles might move to the facility. Vero Beach citizens seem more than open to welcoming the Baltimore organization, but the town right now is all Dodger blue.

A friend and Oriole fan, Tom, shot me a great email this morning about one of our young, but fellow fans, Ray Daugherty.

Well, I have met the young man more than a few times, myself and he was featured in a documentary that aired on ESPN called "Never Miss A Game" and as well, "This Week in Baseball", where TV crews document his day at home with his mothers, Marie and Deanna, and at the ballgame.

Despite he being only four years old, he's just as knowledgeable as any Oriole fan in the game.

The documentary he was in has been nominated for a 2008 Sports Emmy.

The Roundup; Andy MacPhail, Oriole News and Thoughts

Recently on the Orioles.com website there was a Q&A posted in which Andy MacPhail answered a few questions from fans. I would not say that there was anything earth shattering that was divulged and it covering a myriad of topics from drafting players to Daniel Cabrera to both the performances of Matt Wieters and Jake Arrieta in the minors.

The Sun's Jeff Zrebiec also looks into what Andy MacPhail can possibly do at the trade deadline. Despite the start by Baltimore, I see many changes coming on the horizon and the team on the field may not be necessarily the one that finishes up the season.

It sounds like even he was surprised the team's solid start:
"Look, I was pretty forthright in painting a p! retty bleak picture, so I am surprised," MacPhail said. "I would have thought that after the things that I did, that we would struggle more than we have. I think this group is doing it out of tenacity. They're laying it all out on the field and that's all you can ask for. And the things that really matter, the things that they can control, they've really excelled at. I don't really know what's going to happen the next two-thirds [of the season], but the players are the ones that are actually doing it."
Well, in light of his statement and the obvious team chemistry on the field and in the clubhouse, the great start, and whatever else -- he sees the big picture -- the Baltimore Orioles need to get better, and there's not anyone who he will not deal (perhaps Jones or Markakis) to contend.
"I went into the clubhouse and [Nick] Markakis has an Adam Jones T-shirt on, Guillermo Quiroz has a Markakis T-shirt on," MacPhail said. "I don't know what'! s going on exactly with that or the hats or the video. But tho! se are a ll signs of cohesiveness. Regrettably, it takes more than cohesiveness to win the AL East. But I think the people that have watched us, they have to be satisfied with some of the subtle things we've shown."
By the end of July, I really expect a few deals to go down. It sounds like he doesn't even expect his guys to compete and his focus is on rebuilding -- not building a contender.

Meanwhile, you cannot underscore the importance that Daniel Cabrera has had with the Orioles starting off so well. Spencer Fordin has a great piece on the tall righty and his numbers along with his approach on the mound have shown that the things have changed for Daniel. I figured he'd have a huge role in how the Orioles would develop this season, and I think he may have finally come around.

As well, you cannot discount the job that rookie Jim Johnson has done coming out of the bullpen, as he's been nothing but clutch in the mount in key situations. He's obviously not only made an impact on the fans and media -- but as well within the franchise. Lest we not forget about too George Sherill, the Baltimore closer...

Heather Irvin of Oriole Magic has her thoughts of the upcoming draft; Emily Agueda of WNST notes that the Orioles have failed in marketing & the station is also holding a King of Baltimore sports contest; Ben of Oriole Magic! Central marveled at Tuesday's comeback as did Roy Firestone of Orioles Hangout; Scott Hoffman has a piece on Garrett Olson; Scott Christ has his thoughts on MASN; HRB of Dempsey's Army takes issue with Nestor Aparicio; and Roar From 34 mentions a promotion that the York Revolution is having throughout the year...

Finally, a portion of I-395 in Baltimore now has signs on it officially designating it "Ripken Way"...

Angels and White Sox Still Alive; Brew Crew Done; K-Rod is Over-Rated; Playoff Reflections...

Well, I spent another afternoon of watching tons of playoff action – um, actually, between flipping channels to catch some football (especially the 'Skins) and HBO's 'True Blood' – the games were must wins for three teams.

Obviously, as you know, they were the Brewers, White Sox and Angels.

Two – the White Sox and Angels – lived to see another day; however, the Brewers are done.
***

For much of the series, the Brewers offense could not do much and seemed to be at a huge disadvantage; thus, on Sunday, the Phillies finished them off for the season.

Two huge home runs by Pat Burrell, and an impressive performance by Joe Blanton, helped Philadelphia down Milwaukee, 6-1. The home team could not mount much of a challenge, and the squad that needed everything to go their way at the end of the regular season could not translate the same magic into October.

The NLCS could be one to potentially remember, as Philade! lphia takes on the Dodgers. I think Manny Ramirez, his cohorts, and their pitching can match up with the Phillies in all aspects of game, and right now, I give them the advantage.

Although Joe Torre managed the Yankees, I am glad to see him in the post-season again, and not in pinstripe blue. Growing up, the Dodgers were my second team, so I am going to pick them in the NLCS.

As for the Brewers, it was nice to see another small market – especially a team that has not seen themselves in the playoffs after a generation gets in – however, this offseason will be one to watch for them.

Like I said in a previous entry, the Brewers' ownership must make an offer to Sabathia – even if he turns it down – to just placate and give confidence to their fan base. Plus, you've got to wonder if they can even sign Sheets, keep their manager, and list of other stuff.

***

The White Sox, who needed to win, did so yesterday by bea! ting the Rays, 5-3.

Tampa Bay starting pitcher Matt! Garza w as shaky, and the White Sox took advantage of him by getting hit after hit, especially Dewayne's contributions with two hits and runs driven in. It was interesting watching the game how dominant the White Sox crowd was and I think it might have given them the advantage.

I figured the White Sox would win game three just because they were at home, and they had the impressive John Danks on the mound. I haven't thought much of him this season, but he has been clutch for Chicago in the closing weeks and the post-season.

I like what he's brought to the table, and it will be interesting to how Gavin Floyd (a tough pitcher) does versus Andy Sonnanstine – who has been slumping after his impressive first half. I still think Tampa takes the series in four; however, the White Sox have a veteran team that might give them some trouble.
***

The final game yesterday featured the Angels vs. Red Sox, perhaps the least interesting in my eyes, bu! t probably the most compelling and captivating. Well, the Angels nearly gave this one away after Jacoby Ellsbury was able to bloop a ball into center – actually, both Howie Kendrick and Torii Hunter allowed the ball to drop in – thus, Boston plated three runners.

That play would have ended the first inning and perhaps saved America from five hours of drama.

Los Angeles won the game, by the way, 5-4.

Mike Napoli helped the Angels with immensely with two home runs – the first being a two-run job and the second a solo one – to keep them in the game.

The game was tied at 4 in the fifth inning and deadlocked until the twelfth as Erik Aybar plated in Mike Napoli. Javier lopez took the loss, while Jered Weaver in his first relief appearance kept the Angels alive with his clutch performance.

Both teams had multiple chances to score and end the game, but they could not.
And more thing – K-Rod, oh K-Rod. Your 62 saves might ! net you a big pay once the games are done; however, from what ! I have s een so far, you're a tad overrated. You've seemed to be shaky, and that home run you give up to J.D. Drew as not done any favors for your huge quest.

To be quite frank, there are six other closers I can name – including one who wasont he mound last night – whom I would rather have to a pressure packed situation (Fenway is that to the last degree) than K-Rod.

The Evil Empire & Sabathia

I think a 160 million dollar contract over seven years -- guaranteed -- can change the mind of anyone quick. The Yankees pulled out all the stops to acquire him; therefore, I think this move was done out of desperation and also attention.

They are moving into a new ballpark in April, and fans of the Yankees -- take no offense -- think it is their manifest ... Read Moredestiny to end up in the playoffs each year.

I think that's what makes the Yankees so respected -- but also reviled -- so I can imagine the pressure on him will be beyond immense.

Sorry, I don't car! e who you are, you never give a pitcher more than 4 years -- tops.

A lot of teams never heed to this, and someone his size, you've got to wonder how he's going to hold up when he is 33, 34, 35. Yeah, C.C. is a a freak of nature, but you have to wonder about the pressure of New York City, and if he could be much better conditioned.

C.C. obviously strengthens any rotation -- assuming they get the NL version of him and not the one from the AL of '08 (oh my, how people forget); however, the Yankees are no lock to make the playoffs with him on their roster.

If anything, I think the Yankees STILL need to get much, much younger. Well, now it looks like they are after Lowe, Burnett and Sheets -- at the same time!

I hate to say it, but what's going with the Yankees this week is why people hate them. Wow, you'll have a hell a starting rotation with Andy Pettitte or Joba Chamberlain in the mix, but it's still no guarantee for the playoffs. W! hat happens when Sheets or one of those five get injured consi! dering h ow much money is now bwing handed out?

If anything, the Yankees are exactly what capitalism is about -- then again, the way things are going, why would think something is wrong with the economy?

Before I go, well I as an Oriole fan really do not look forward to seeing him on the mound multiple times per season.

Luke Scott Signed To A Deal: Sherrill & Quick Hits

This afternoon, the Orioles and Luke Scott came to contract terms for the 2009 season. The deal is worth $2.4 million and was reached on Tuesday morning. Scott hit .257 with 23 home runs and 65 RBIs in 2008, and he should probably be slated as the designated hitter with the acquistion of Felix Pie over the weekend.

In other news, the only arbitration eligible player left on the roster, George Sherrill could not reach a deal with the Orioles and will more than likely have his case heard in the next few weeks.

From the Orioles.com: Sherrill, who has nearly four years of service time, requested a $3.4 million salary and was offered $2.2 million by the Orioles. Those proposals leave a sizable chance of the t! wo sides settling in the middle before the arbitrator's ruling, and either figure will represent a sizable raise for Sherrill, who made a $980,000 base salary last season.

Brian Roberts Signed to a Four Year/$40 Million Deal

According to Roch Kubatko of MASN, the deal for Brian Roberts seems to be done.

From Roch's Blog: There's more to do than just cross the T's and dot the I's, but the Orioles are close to reaching an agreement on a contract extension with Brian Roberts that has been confirmed at four years and $40 million.

Two open issues need to be addressed, and one of them is just about resolved, the other in discussion. Neither issue is a deal-breaker. The principal stuff is done.

Look for Roberts to take his physical on Thursday and the club to make an announcement on Friday.

Again, I think he might have been signed for one year too long, and he will not be the same player now ! than he will be at the end of the contract; however, I can understand that he's got a lot of value on and off the field to the Baltimore organization.

I just know a lot of fans are happy that he's remaining in the black and orange.

O's Spanked by Rays, 11-3, Finish Homestand 4-2; Pictures

After winning the first two games against the Rays in the three game series, the Orioles ran into a brick wall on a cool Easter Sunday. The Tampa offense came alive and they beat Baltimore, 11-3.

It was ugly as Adam Eaton -- who Ihad very little confidence in -- lasted only four innings and gave up four earned runs. He labored through the start, and by the time it was all over, Eaton threw 100 pitches in his outing; moreover, he was all over the place and found himself in trouble again and again. One would think if Eaton has another outing or two like this, he won't be an Oriole for long.

If Eaton was bad, his replacement was even worse. Brian Bass who was horrible on Wednesday, sucked badly on Easter as he became Baltimore's sacrifical lamb as he went 3 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs on right hits all earned -- including four home runs. Dennis Sarfate closed out the game by pitching 1 2/3 scoreless innings.

The Orioles made things fun as they score! d twice off reliever Grant Balfour in the ninth -- who could not get anyone out and was charged with three runs given up; however, J.P. Howell saved the Rays and finished out the game. Adam Jones continued his hot start with two hits, and Luke Scott along with Felix Pie each drove in a run with bases loaded walks.

Tillman Shaky, But O's Take One From Royals...

The future again was on display with the Baltimore Orioles last night at the Yard, as rookie Chris Tillman – who has been shining down on the farm in Norfolk – made his long awaited debut in Baltimore on Wednesday. If you look at the rotation going into the year, versus today, it's amazing the turnover that has taken place, especially with four rookies in the starting rotation.

When the dust settled, Baltimore won for only the third time in twelve games as they beat Kansas City, 7-3, thanks to breaking a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning thanks to a Nick Markakis 2 RBI-single along with a Royals bullpen that let the game go. Before Nick's big hit, the Orioles tied the game off an Adam Jones RBI-double. The Orioles added two more runs in the eighth inning off a Marakais two-run single.

The offense scuffle! d against Zack Greinke – a Cy Young Award Candidate – and he went six innings, and gave up two runs – courtesy of an Adam Jones two-run homer in the first inning for his 17th of year (he's now homered in three straight games). After the Orioles got their runs off Greinke in the first, he settled and looked like one of the best pitchers in the American League.

Rangers Fire Tom Renney & Perry Pearn

Per Steve Zipay of NewsDay:

In the midst of a late-season tailspin and with the strong possibility of his team missing the playoffs, Rangers head coach Tom Renney was dismissed today after more five years behind the bench.

No replacement was immediately named.

Ending weeks of media speculation, Rangers president and general manager Glen Sather cut the cord today. A team spokesman said assistant coach Perry Pearn also was fired. Mike Pelino and goaltending coach Benoit Allaire remain.

Already there are rumors circulating about who the replacement for Renney will be. The front runners are ex-Tampa coach John Tortorella and Rangers Assistant GM Jim Schoenfeld. As of 2:15pm it appears that Tororella is the favorite and according to Bob McKenize of TSN:
the New York Rangers and John Tortorella have an agreement in place that would make him the next head coach of the NHL team, bu! t that the Tampa Bay Lightning have not yet been contacted for permission.

Interesting Tidbit:
All 4 teams that started the season in Europe (Pittsburgh, Ottawa, Tampa & now the Rangers) have fired their coach

Rangers With Big Win Over Wild

The Rangers walked out of MSG tonight with two points that they needed to make sure that they continued to at least stay in the hunt for a higher playoff berth. The Rangers finished their three game homestand with four points, which is what I said was the least they needed to take out of those three games. In my opinion this was one of, if not the most, entertaining games of the season. It was a physical game from the start and there was hard hitting and scrums after almost every stoppage of play around the goalies on each side of the ice.

Despite the fact that Derek Boogaard wasn't in the lineup for the Wild, Colton Orr was still able to find a dance partner (although at first it didn't look like Nolan was willing). After Orr took a run at Nolan at the Wild blue line, Nolan didn't look too happy and after Orr fired a punch before Nolan got his gloves off, the two squared off. Orr got the better of Nolan but it was typical Owen Nolan being the leader that he is. C! ompare Nolan dropping his gloves with Orr to Brendan Shanahan dropping his gloves with Donald Brashear a few seasons ago at the Garden. [Video]

Sean Avery also got in his first fight since returning to the Blueshirts. He and Cal Clutterbuck had a pretty entertaining fight of their own at center ice, a good showing by both players. [Video]

Nik Zherdev scored a first period goal and added an assist in the second period when he was part of the play that led to the Scott Gomez game winning goal. Nik Antropov was once again one of the best Rangers on the ice, using his 6'6 frame effectively on numerous occasions throughout the night to shield Wild players away from the puck and then either take a shot himself or set up another Ranger. Mike Sauer didn't look out of place on the Rangers blue line, it was a successfu! l NHL debut for the 21 year old who was called up from Hartfor! d to rep lace the injured Michal Rozsival.

Shout out to Captain Invisible (Drury) for once again living up to the nickname that I've given him!

The Rangers next game is in Atlanta on Thursday night, where they'll be expected to get another two points.

Rangers Sign RFA Ryan Callahan

Great news for the Rangers this evening as it was announced that they've come to agreement with Ryan Callahan over a new contract. Terms of the deal are not yet available.

Update:
According to Blue Notes, it's a two year deal, he'll make $2.2M the first year and $2.4M the second year, making him a $2.3M cap hit.

According to the Rangers website:
New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has agreed to terms with forward Ryan Callahan.

Callahan, 24, established career-highs in games played (81), goals (22), assists (18), points (40), and penalty minutes (45) last season. He also won the Steven McDonald Award, voted by the fans as the player who performs "above and b! eyond the call of duty."

Callahan ranked second on the team with a career-high, 237 shots, first with a plus-seven rating and tied for fourth on the club in goals. In addition, he led the team and ranked fourth in the NHL with 265 hits. Callahan posted a team-high, six-game scoring streak from March 12 at Nashville to March 22 against Ottawa, recording eight points (four goals and four assists) over the span, and tied for the team-high with a three-game goal streak (March 17 at Montreal to March 22 vs. Ottawa).

He reached the 20-goal plateau for the first time in his career on March 28 at Pittsburgh, and skated in his 100th NHL contest on December 16 at Anaheim. Callahan also skated in all seven playoff games with the Rangers, and tied for the team lead with two goals.

On June 30th, the Rochester, New York native was one of 34 players who were invited to the U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Camp to be held August 17 to 19.

Callahan ! has skated in 147 career regular season games in three seasons! with th e Rangers, registering 34 goals and 25 assists for 59 points, along with 85 penalty minutes. He ranked fourth in the NHL among rookies with 139 hits and tied for third on the team with a plus-seven rating during the 2007-08 season. He finished that season recording a plus or even rating in 36 of his last 40 contests.

In 2006-07, Callahan tallied two goals, including his first career NHL point, on March 17 against Boston. He made his NHL debut on December 1, 2006 at Buffalo. In addition, Callahan has skated in 27 playoff contests with the Rangers, recording six goals and three assists for nine points, along with 20 penalty minutes.

Callahan was originally the Rangers' fourth round selection, 127th overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

Hasil Pertandingan | Serie A 2009/2010 | Sampdoria Gagal Kembali ke Puncak

sampdoria

Sampdoria unggul terlebih dulu ketika pertandingan baru berjalan 23 menit. Menerima assist Daniele Mannini, sundulannya membuat gawang tim tamu bobol.

Tetapi keunggulan tuan rumah hanya bertahan tujuh menit. Pada menit 30, umpan Nicola Amoruso langsung diterima Daniele Galloppa. Nama terakhir melepaskan sebuah sepakan kaki kanan dari l! uar kotak penalti yang kemudian mengubah kedudukan menjadi 1-1! .
< br />Meski lebih menguasai permainan, Soccernet mencatat Sampdoria menang penguasaan bola 51:49, tuan rumah tetap tak mampu menambah gol. Hasilnya skor 1-1 pun bertahan hingga peluit panjang dibunyikan.

Roma Menang, Fiorentina Imbang

Beruntung buat I Lupi, mereka memiliki Francesco Totti.

Setelah Diego Milito belum menunjukkan progres positif, Samuel Eto'o sepertinya turut menepi akibat digerogot cedera.

Inter akan melawat ke Genoa pada Sabtu, (17/10/09). Nerazzurri membutuhkan poin penuh guna memantapkan posisinya di puncak klasemen Seri A.

Namun jalan terjal membentang dihadapan Inter.

British tabloid, The People, has stated this morning that Tottenham and West Ham are in talks about swapping Robbie Keane for Marlon Harewood.

I really do hope that the newspaper added this story so as to fill its space. There can't be any truth in this story can there?

I am sure that Keane wouldn't be interested in a move to our feeder club. And then there is the sweet case of Harewood's outstanding talent……yeah right! I watched some of West Ham's matches last season in which Marlon had trouble hitting a barn door.

What do you think? Is this story real? If so, would we welcome Harewood over Keane?

Malbranque takes medical

It looks as though "the Steed" will be moving to Sunderland, given that he passes his medical. If the player does complete his move, he will be the third player to have left us for Sunderland, with Tainio, and Chimbonda already in the North-East.

The fee that Sunderland have thus far paid Tottenham Hotspur for Tainio & Chimbonda has not been disclosed.

Depending on which paper you read, Malbranque's fee could be from as little as £2 million or as much as £7 million.

Looks like Spurs don't fancy Veloso

Have I missed something? With all due respect to Bolton Wanderers, how on earth are they nearing the transfer of the Portuguese International tough-tackling midfielder, Miguel Veloso?

We apparently were in for him last summer, but nothing materialised. Veloso's club, Sporting Lisbon, are demanding €12 million. For those that have seen him play, I am sure that you'll agree that he's worth every penny, and exactly what we need at the moment.

Harry has said that we don't have any players that ca! n tackle, but here's one that's available. It looks like Sporting are ready to cash in on the 22 year-old, and I just hope we haven't missed the boat on him.

Newcastle United are also showing an interest, but due to their financial restrictions at the moment, it looks as though they'll pull out of any deal to bring Veloso to the Premier League.

Dzeko Membujuk Milan

Wolfsburg - Pemain terbaik Liga Jerman musim 2008/2009 Edin Dzeko sepertinya tertarik dengan keinginan AC Milan merekrut dirinya. Kalau memang serius, Milan diharapkan segera mengambil langkah kongkret.

Berlusconi: Sepakbola Harus 'Normal' Lagi

Milan Pelit, Fabiano Lepas

Orang bilang no news is good news, tapi dalam kasus ini, kebalikannya," tutur Fuentes yang dikutip ! Goal.
Kenapa, Milan?

Pirlo Akhirnya Angkat Bicara

MILAN - Setelah tutup mulut soal pendekatan Chelsea terhadapnya, Andrea Pirlo akhirnya angkat bicara.
Namun The Blues mulai sekarang lebih baik melupakan Pirlo.

Maldini: Milan Bisa Raih Scudetto Jika Kalahkan Inter

MILAN - Mantan kapten AC Milan Paolo Maldini menyatakan, klubnya bisa raih scudetto Serie-A musim 2009/10.
Di gionartta 1, "I Rossoneri" sukses memetik tiga angka setelah mengalahkan Siena 2-1.

Leonardo Ingin Pirlo Jadi "Trequartista"

MILAN — Pelatih AC Milan Leonardo terkesan dengan performa Andrea Pirlo bersama tim nasional Italia ketika memukul Bulgaria 2-0 dalam lanjutan kualifikasi Piala Dunia. Ia pun berpikir untuk mengubah posisi main Pirlo di klub menjadi penyerang lubang (trequartista).
Sejatinya, Pirlo memang penyerang lubang.
Armando Picchi, dalam lanjutan Serie A, Sabtu (12/9).

"Saya pikir jika melihat penampilan semalam, minimal kami seri.

Man Utd v Man City preview

United will be eager to prove that the suggested shift in power between the two clubs, brought on by City's extravagant spending this summer, is vastly exaggerated.

Meanwhile Mark Hughes' men will be determined to show their fantastic 4-2 win over Arsenal last time out was no flash in the pan.

The champions head into the clash in good form having produced their best performance of the season in the 3-1 win at Tottenham last week, ending Spurs' 100 per cent record in the process, something the Red Devils will be looking to do to City on Sunday.

City will not be without confidence themselves having won their opening four Premier League games culminating in a sensational win over the Gunners, a result which had many, not just tipping City for a top-four spot but a full-on title tilt.

Sir Alex Ferguson's men have only beaten their near neighbours twice in their last eight meetings at the Theatre of Dreams, a record the Scot is sure to ! want to improve this weekend.

Ferguson has fuelled the fire considerably ahead of the clash after he described City's behaviour following their capture of Carlos Tevez as 'arrogant' and 'cocky' before declaring that he still classed Liverpool as United's main rivals.

Ferdinand doubt
United look certain to be without Rio Ferdinand for the match after the defender aggravated his groin injury in the win at White Hart Lane last time out.

The 30-year-old made his first league start of the season and completed the full 90 minutes against Spurs but was then forced to sit out of the 1-0 UEFA Champions League win at Besiktas in midweek and he is likely to miss out again.

Jonny Evans stepped in for Ferdinand on Tuesday and he should do so again against City.

Ferguson opted to play Wayne Rooney as a lone striker in Turkey but expect Dimitar Berbatov to come back in and partner the England ace on Sunday.

The champi! ons will be without the suspended Paul Scholes after he was se! nt-off a gainst Tottenham for two bookable offences so Ryan Giggs, who was left out completely against Besiktas, could step straight back in.

Another to miss out altogether against the Turks was midfielder Darren Fletcher and he should slot straight back in against City while Edwin Van der Sar (hand), Rafael (shoulder), Owen Hargreaves (knees) and Gabriel Obertan (back) remain sidelined.

Striker crisis
Hughes was criticised for signing too many strikers in the summer but it now looks like he was right to do so.

Star frontman Emmanuel Adebayor will miss the clash through suspension after the Football Association handed him a three-game ban for scraping his boot down Arsenal forward Robin Van Persie's face last week.

The Togo international will be sorely missed having scored in every league game so far this season.

Former United idol Carlos Tevez is also a doubt after he injured his knee playing for Argentina last week. !

The 25-year-old was a firm favourite amongst Red Devils supporters during his two-year stay at the club but following his switch to City, after he snubbed an offer from United, it remains to be seen what sort of reception he will receive should he take to the field.

Tevez is supposedly confident he will play his part but strike partner Robinho will miss out with an ankle injury so Benjani, who is also struggling with a thigh problem, and Craig Bellamy could be called upon in attack by Hughes.

City are also sweating on the fitness of influential midfielder Stephen Ireland (ankle/foot) while Roque Santa Cruz (knee), Vincent Kompany (ankle/foot) and Michael Johnson (hip) are definitely out.

Probable starting XIs:

Man Utd: Foster, O'Shea, Evans, Vidic, Evra, Nani, Fletcher, Anderson, Valencia, Berbatov, Rooney.

Man City: Given, Richards, Bridge, Toure, Lescott, De Jong, Barry, Ireland, Wright-Phillips, Petrov, ! Bellamy.

Man Utd Kehilangan Hargeaves Lagi

Manager Setan Merah Sir !

Tebalnya Kocek Becks Kalahkan Owen & Rooney

London,-

In preallarme c'è Artur.

TOTTI, DUE MESI OUT

JUVE IN SEMIFINALE

Aquilani eager to play alongside Stevie G

Liverpool new boy Alberto Aquilani insists he does not want to be compared to Xabi Alonso at Anfield.

Aquilani has been brought in from Roma to help fill the void left by Alonso's departure to Real Madrid.

The Italian international, who will miss the start of the season as he recovers from ankle surgery, says he is not a direct replacement for Alonso as he has a different style of play than the Spaniard.

"He was a very important player at this club," said Aquila! ni as he was unveiled at Anfield.

"But I am not his natural substitute as I do not have the same characteristics as him.

"I have a different style in that I like to move around and not stay in the same place."

Aquilani is not expected to make his debut for Liverpool until October because of his injury, but the midfielder is confident of making a speedy return as the Reds medical staff have got to the root of the injury.
"At Roma my worries were linked with injury. But when I came to Liverpool, the doctor highlighted exactly the problem I have," added Aquilani.

"We now have a very good picture and I hope it will be solved so that I will not be absent again.

"It is a shame I cannot play straight away but it is important to get better, then play well. I am focusing on that."

There have been fears that Aquilani could struggle to cope with the physical demands of the English game, but the 26-year-old is sure ! he will adapt to the rigors of the Premier League.

! "I canno t wait to be involved as it is a different type of league to the one in Italy and a difficult level to play in. I am very excited about what lies ahead," noted Aquilani.

"This is a very important occasion for me as I am joining a big club with a rich history.

"While this is one of the best leagues in the world, Liverpool have to be one of the main candidates for winning the title."

Aquilani is excited about the prospect of playing alongside Reds skipper Steven Gerrardwho he describes as the best midfielder in the world.
"Even before coming to Liverpool, I thought Steven Gerrard was the strongest midfielder in the world," said Aquilani.

"I will be very proud to play alongside him and hope I can learn from his game.

"I am looking forward to playing in the same team with players of that kind.

"Liverpool have had good players for a number of years and I have always liked their system of play."
